Exclamation mark!

E-mail Print PDF
Funny how an inexpensive tool can help a watch increase in value. But that is precisely what happend, when I fiddled around with a €10 magnifying glass that a friend had purchased at a Munich watch show. When switching on the little sharp light in the magnifying glass and getting up-close-and-personal with the – admittedly – patinaed dial of my ref. 5508 Rolex Submariner from 1962 I realized that there was a small dot underneath the baton hourmarker at ”6”.

A dot like that means that the dial of my 5508 actually is an ”Exclamation Mark” dial. Which in the frenzied Rolex collectors environment means way more aaahh'ing and uuhhh'ing than if my 5508 was without this little dot.

Not quite sure HOW much this dot means in terms of monetary value, but undoubtedly my horological pension plan now offers a few extra days in the sun on that deserted island where I will write my ticking memoirs one day.

Info on exclamation mark dials here.
